Daily Craig: Let's Radio

It is time for the Rodeo in Houston. For those not from around here, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest and longest in the world. It began last night with the first night of the World BBQ Cookoff. The cook teams all compete for high honors in Ribs, Chicken, and Brisket. There is no chili involved so to avoid instant scorn, don't call it the CHILI COOKOFF. It is mostly a bbq and beer driven TEXAS MARDI GRAS. It celebrates the cattle drives and cowboys who helped form the great stories that make up TEXAS. Without question, the best looking women ever usually show up. I mention this because people watching rules.

The trail riders come into Memorial Park today and they will build fires near their expensive motor homes and finish off the last of the 200 cases of beer and whiskey they had in reserve. They block traffic but we don't care because it's GO TEXAN DAY. Office workers will break out their 4X Beavers (that is a hat ya'll) and thousands of pairs of Wranglers will walk the streets of downtown and in the many districts frequented by 20 somethings. Don't wear designer jeans. Not on THIS DAY. You might just figure biscuits, gravy, and mesquite cooked slabs of cows or pigs or chickens is on the menu. Not a salad in sight. This is Texas, dammit. We had the Republican debate here last night. Ok, forget that last bit of news.

I ONCE had to pick up a prospective employee for ch. 2 on Go Texan Day. We drove from IAH to CH. 2 and right on 610 we ran smack dab into the SALT GRASS TRAIL RIDERS. The young lady from Minnesota said, "Oh my, what is all this? "I cinched up my Wranglers and said..."It's Friday".  I gotta see if I can rustle up some wrist bands for the free beer tent. It only hurts when I "Yipee".
