Officials: Katy firefighter shoots, kills self while on duty

KATY, Texas – A Katy Fire Department firefighter died in the line of duty Sunday night.

According to officials, the firefighter suffered a gunshot wound at the firehouse on Sunday evening.  The city of Katy identified the firefighter as Jason M. Anderson.

Anderson was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Medical Center. His death has been ruled a suicide, officials confirmed at a press conference Monday morning.

Officials released the following statement on Sunday, "This afternoon the Katy Fire Department suddenly and regretfully lost one of our own Firefighter/EMT's while on duty. There is an investigation pending at this time as well as the notification of the family."

Anderson was with the Katy Fire Department since 2013 and also served with the Atascocita Fire Department.

A memorial service for Anderson will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Merrell Center, 6301 S. Stadium Lane in Katy.
