HOUSTON – There is a major traffic alert this weekend on Houston's east side.
The Harris County Toll Road Authority is closing the Houston Ship Channel Bridge from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
Crews are installing new roadside tolling equipment at the ship channel bridge plaza.
Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes:
- Southbound traffic on the tollway can exit at Woodforest Blvd., or
- Southbound traffic on the Sam Houston Tollway will have access to the direct connectors to I-10 westbound to I-610, and to I-10 eastbound through Channelview.
- Northbound Sam Houston Tollway traffic can access Highway 225 westbound to I-610 and eastbound to Highway 146

Drivers may also use the Washburn Tunnel as an alternate route. However, the HCTRA warns drivers that due to the tollway closure, there may be traffic congestion at the tunnel.
