HOUSTON – Turns out there can be a big difference between buying generic versus name brands.
Consumer Reports tested hundreds of items to determine the best buys.
Experts say Target's ketchup rivals Heinz and the mayonnaise is as creamy and balanced as Hellman's.
Up & Up generic drugs proved to be a better value, with lower prices than most drugstores.
Testers recommend avoiding the Market Pantry Plain Nonfat Yogurt. They claim it was astringent and had a chalkier texture than others.
When shopping at Walmart and Sam's Club, head for the bacon. The Great Value Lower Sodium Bacon is a better value along with Great Value Strong & Absorbent Paper Towels and Great Value Powder Packs Dishwasher Detergent.
However, Consumer Reports recommends skipping the coffee aisle. Great Value Classic Roast Coffee is listed as a product to avoid. The testers said it was harsh and grainy.
At Costco, some of the best values can be found with Kirkland Signature Organic Stock, Kirkland Signature Real Mayo and Kirkland Signature Free and Clear Liquid Laundry Detergent.
Experts say one thing to avoid at Costco is the Kirkland Signature House Blend Coffee Beans.
