Houston Club building imploded downtown

HOUSTON – The historic downtown Houston Club Building was imploded Sunday morning.

The Rusk building was designed in 1954 for the city's power players. The Houston Club moved to One Shell Plaza in recent years.

Crews detonated more than 500 pounds of explosives to bring down the building. It took less than a minute for the building to collapse.

Local 2 spoke with one family with three generations watching the implosion.

"I remember as a kid, my father brought me out, so I wanted to return the favor to my kids," said Rick Sonora.

"It was an experience, and now that I have grandkids, you have to bring them over and let them experience it, at least one time," said Jack Sonora.

STREET CLOSURES

Many major thoroughfares will be closed in downtown Houston due to the implosion.

The demolition will take place at 811 Rusk Street. The following are the borders of the area shut down: From Smith Street to McKinney Street to Fannin Street to Prairie Street. That means Milam, Louisiana, Rusk, Travis, Main, Walker, Capital and Texas streets within that area will be impacted, especially on the day of implosion.
