Man accused of shooting at officers while holding baby

Deputies said Fabian Garcia was responsible for a violent incident involving his girlfriend and baby.

CHAMBERS COUNTY – The Chambers County Sheriff's Office said they have arrested a man who led officers on a chase and then shot at officers while holding a baby in his arms.

Police say it started around 9:30 Wednesday night when 27-year-old Fabian Garcia was looking for his girlfriend Elizabeth Vega.

Police say he was drunk and drove to her home on Pinemont Place and kicked down the door looking for her.

Once Fabian Garcia was inside this home, he held a gun on his girlfriends' family, in order to kidnap her and their 6-month-old baby girl, police said.

Police say Garcia drove them to a Bay Ridge subdivision, and while driving, fired several shots out of the vehicle.

"He had fired some rounds off at a white vehicle that was passing by that had honked at him," said Detective Brian Parker of the Baytown Police Department.

At a home in the subdivision, Chambers County deputies say Garcia got into a fight with his girlfriend's brother, Justin Vega and shot him in the shoulder.

During the chaos, his girlfriend tried to escape with her baby, but police say Garcia forced them back into the vehicle and sped off.

"Fabian Garcia had drove her and the child out to a cemetery in Chambers County where his mother was buried, and made a comment we are going to die with my mother, we are going to go be with my mother," said Parker.

Police say Garcia fired shots in the air but kept driving. A DPS trooper and a Chambers County deputy chased Garcia at a high rate of speed. As Garcia drove over I-10 on FM 180, officials say he hit a guardrail and drove into the grass.

He jumped out of the car with his baby in his arms and started shooting at law enforcement. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

Garcia is in the Chamber County jail tonight. He is charged with three counts of attempted capital murder.
