HOUSTON – Another deadly shooting at a high school party is bringing awareness to the issue of gun violence.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee held press conference Monday at Texas Southern University. She said it's time to really talk about gun violence before another family has to bury their child.
Lee, accompanied by Yates High School students from in her district, said these young lives deserve protection in light of the recent gun violence that has erupted in our area involving teens.
Two recent shootings at off-campus high school parties have claimed the lives of three teenagers.
At a party on November 9 in Cypress, two students were killed and nearly two dozen others were injured. Then, on Saturday, a teen girl died after a shooting at a party in southwest Houston.
Lee is set to introduce new pieces of legislation in Washington, D.C. later Monday called the Child Gun Safety and Gun Access Prevention Act.
According to Lee, her proposal will not take guns out of the hands of responsible adults, but instead will make sure weapons do not fall in the hands of reckless teens eager to pull the trigger.
"These young people are worth saving," Lee said Monday. "They are worth saving. They are worth studying and giving resources, and worth storing our guns. They are worth the ATF coming out and being seen on the issue of gun violence among young people."
In addition to legislation, Congresswoman Lee said she will be working with the U.S. Department of Labor to increase the number of summer jobs available to help teach students responsibility and work ethic.
As for the investigation into both deadly shootings, detectives are still searching for the gunmen.
