Police: Off-duty cop foils would-be robbers

HOUSTON – An off-duty Houston police officer has been credited with foiling the plans of some armed robbers in southwest Houston.

Investigators said around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, an off-duty Houston police officer was working an approved extra job at the Radio Shack in the 1000 block of North Gessner near the Katy Freeway.

Three masked crooks walked in, and one of them pointed a gun directly at the officer, police said. That's when the officer pulled his own gun and opened fire, investigators said.

Police said the suspects decided to make a run for it. Two fled through a room in the back while the third took off through the front door.

Investigators said neither the police officer nor the two employees inside the store were hit during the confrontation. Police said they don't think any of the crooks were hit.
