Investigators said Bethancourt admitted to his stepfather that he killed their dog. When his stepfather asked him why, investigators said Bethancourt said it was because his stepfather's life was too perfect and he wanted him to go through the same kind of hell he went through.

The stepfather said he decided not to go home and asked his wife to do the same. Investigators said the stepfather took a trip to Italy, Texas, to see his son, and the mother went to stay at a friend's house for the night.

On his way to Italy, investigators said the stepfather talked to Bethancourt on the phone and told him he wanted him out of the house because he was tired of his violence.

Officials said Bethancourt told his stepfather that he was in their house and that he "had plans for him." Investigators said Bethancourt then told him that he was going to "mess up his house."

Bethancourt has been charged with arson and was booked into the Harris County Jail with bond set at $30,000.
