HOUSTON – A Houston businessman is auctioning off his rare 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card.
The card is one of the most sought-after sports collectibles in the world and could sell for more than $1 million.
The owner of the card wants to stay anonymous and is selling the card in an online auction through Godwin & Co.
Wagner, nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman," is a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest players of his era.
He spent most of his 21-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Wagner baseball card was released in cigarette packs sold by the American Tobacco Co. from 1909 to 1911. What makes the card special is that it was pulled from circulation after about 200 were issued.
Historians believe about 60 of the 1909 Wagner cards still exist, but most are in poor condition.
According to a rating by Sportscard Guarantee Corp., the quality of the card being auctioned is better than all but five of the Wagner cards in existence.
Antiques expert Reyne Hirsch said no matter what the condition, this card will sell.
"When you're talking about something that there's only 60 of, you'd rather have one in poor condition than not have one at all," said Hirsch.
The auction continues through April 19.
