High-speed police chase ends in crash

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A high-speed chase that began in Harris County ended in a crash near Needville in Fort Bend County Friday morning.

Fort Bend County deputies said officers tried to pull over Elizabeth Wilson, 30, on suspicion of a traffic violation in Harris County shortly after 3 a.m.

"It was a very bizarre chase," spokesman Bob Haenel said. "She headed into Houston, got on the Loop of all things and then made a U-turn and went west again. It was kind of strange in that account."

Investigators said the chase started on FM 1092 and went onto Highway 90 near Stafford. Wilson headed toward the Astrodome area, made a U-turn and ended up on the Southwest Freeway, officials said.

"Fortunately, it was in the middle of the night, so there wasn't a great deal of traffic," Haenel said. "But anytime you have a chase, it's kind of a dangerous situation."

Deputies said speeds reached 100 mph at times.

Once the chase reached Fort Bend County, deputies used spike strips on the Southwest Freeway at Williams Way to blow out the car's tires, officials said.

Wilson drove about 8 miles on the rims until parts started coming off the vehicle and it crashed into a ditch off Highway 59 near Beasley, investigators said.

"She refused to get out of the vehicle when she stopped," Haenel said. "Deputies were forced to shatter the window. She has very minor cuts."

Debris from the vehicle damaged two deputy cruisers, including blowing out a tire and smashing a headlight.

Wilson was arrested and faces several charges, including driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and evading arrest.
