Spanish Trail Riders to end 109-mile journey in Memorial Park for HLSR

HOUSTON – The Spanish Trail riders are making their way to Memorial Park for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The group started their 109-mile journey last Saturday morning from Shepherd, Texas.  As riders made their way into the north side of Houston on Thursday, they were happy to finally see the sun.  "Today is beautiful especially compared to yesterday," said Rider Christine Cantu.

The Spanish Trail Ride is one of more than a dozen currently happening across the Houston area.  It was started back in 1961.  "We carry on the tradition of our forefathers," said Trail Boss Joe Cantrell.

Cantrell is leading a total of 75 horses and seven wagons into Houston.  They start each day bright and early and ride until about 4 p.m.  The group expects to make it to Memorial Park, where all the other trail riders will gather Friday, at about 1 p.m.
