Motorists face flooded roads, treacherous conditions as state of emergency declared in Auckland

A state of local emergency was declared in Auckland on May 9, as severe flooding lashed the region. Significant delays were reported on roads across the city. Video filmed by Andi Brotherston shows cars precariously driving through floodwaters on the north-western motorway overbridge in Kingsland. “Not often you get flooding 20m above a motorway,” Brotherston wrote in a tweet accompanying the video. Local media citing a MetService meteorologist reported the most intense rainfall was still yet to come. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown urged Aucklanders to remain calm but be vigilant.
