The Houston City Council along with Mayor Sylvester Turner voted Wednesday to rename a police substation after a slain Houston Police Sergeant.

The Houston Police Department teamed up with the Houston chapter of the NAACP to host a rally meant to address the recent rise in crime as well as provide community members the opportunity to “discuss issues of concern within their community, improve police and community relations.”

A termination letter obtained Thursday by KPRC 2 Investigates showed that a Houston police officer was fired after running during a shooting that left a sergeant at the scene dead.

The fallout from Houston Sgt. Harold Preston’s death was handed down earlier this week.

HOUSTON – The man accused of killing a Houston police sergeant appeared before a judge for the first time Wednesday morning, where the judge upheld his no bond. Wearing a yellow jumpsuit, 51-year-old Elmer Manzano had a bandage wrapped around his right arm and used headphones for a translator during his appearance. Manzano is charged with capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated assault after being accused of killing HPD Sgt. Manzano was also shot in the stomach by Preston during the gunfire exchange and was hospitalized for nearly a week. During a probable cause hearing Sunday, prosecutors said Manzano claimed officers shot at him first before he returned fire.

If that conviction had shown up, officers would have known that Manzano was violating federal gun laws by possessing a weapon. “We did our best to deal with what we knew at the time, and so did the DA’s office,” Acevedo said.

Prosecutors have charged Manzano with capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. And the suspect immediately opened fire.”The investigation remains on-going into all of the specifics on how the shooting played out.
