The surprising popularity of carp fishing in Texas
Fairchild, an Austin school teacher, is hooked on carp fishing. But some wrongly believed carp threatened native species, and the commission was abolished four years later, according to Aaron Reed’s book, Fly Fishing Austin & Central Texas. Today non-native common carp are ubiquitous in lakes and rivers across the state, and carp fishing has grown in popularity. Both Fairchild and Fenner, who works as a fishing guide, practice what’s called Euro-style carp fishing. If you’re looking for a guide, check with Austin Carp Angler, whose members can show you the basics.

The Galveston Fishing Pier is open to anglers 24 hours a day. Here’s what it looks like this year
One hot spot is the Galveston Fishing Pier, located at 9001 Seawall Blvd. However, the pier did suffer extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and was shut down for a time. It’s open 24 hours a day which makes it an ideal place to fish. You don’t have to be an experienced fisherman either, those new to fishing are welcome, including kids. Recently, KPRC 2 photojournalists Alex Radow and Allen Reid spent a day the pier to capture some of the sights and sounds.

6-year-old angler hooks long-lost cell phone
A long-lost cell phone is back with its owner after spending nearly a year at the bottom of Maryland's Severn River. The phone, inside a waterproof case, was 6-year-old Reagan Votaw's first catch during a recent fishing outing. The family took the phone home, cut it out of its now clam-encrusted case and worked to dry it out. That owner turned out to be 8th grader Preston Shapiro, who lost the phone while kayaking with a friend. “What surprised me most was that i had no idea that this thing was going to work,” he said after being reunited with the phone.

New England man breaks state record with monster 37-pound lake trout
(CNN) – When Thomas Knight set out on the ice to go fishing for lake trout, he was determined to haul in a big one. He came prepared with an 11-inch sucker because big bait attracts big fish, he said. Knight, of Meredith, New Hampshire, caught a lake trout last Tuesday that weighed in at 37.65 pounds, easily breaking the state record that was more than 60 years old. After catching the fish, he immediately packed it in an ice box with snow and called the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. "This fish is now the largest lake trout caught in all of New England," Schafermeyer said.
