Firefighters and EMS units arrived on the first scene just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of FM 1374 West and the I-45 feeder. A pickup truck had struck a car in the intersection, trapping the injured driver in her car. Firefighters were able to free the driver within three minutes of arriving, and she was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Within minutes of rescuing the driver, firefighters were dispatched to a second accident on FM 1374 West. An EMS unit was dispatched from Huntsville to assist at the second accident.
At 6:20 p.m., multiple reports came in about a head-on collision in the northbound lanes of I-45 between New Waverly and Huntsville. A southbound pickup truck had crossed over the freeway through the tension cable barrier into the northbound lanes, striking a car, instantly killing the female driver and lone occupant of the car.
The driver of the pickup truck was transported in stable condition to Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
The accident left one of the barrier cables stretched across the northbound lanes, completely shutting off the freeway traffic for over an hour, backing up traffic for miles while contractors from the Texas Department of Transportation worked to remove tension from the cable and clear the freeway.
Department of Public Safety troopers are conducting the investigation into all three incidents.
