Meyerland man helps save family from flood

HOUSTON – When it started raining Saturday, David and Jennifer Rupe got a little nervous.

"Yeah, a little PTSD, yeah. Absolutely," David Rupe said.

The Rupes and their four children have been living in their 600-square-foot garage apartment and in their garage after their Meyerland home flooded in May. More than $100,000 in damage was done, and now their home is under construction.

"It just made more sense for us to stay here," David Rupe said.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, the Rupes took a walk to Brays Bayou to check the water levels.

"As it started raining, the water was coming up the road," David Rupe said. "You start thinking, 'Is this going to happen again?'"

The water was rising and the Rupes said they noticed a few cars had gotten stuck. They saw a family of four trying to climb out of a car, but a woman was having problems.

"She fell down," David Rupe said. "She couldn't move well."

The woman, Sara lanyz, is six months pregnant with twins. The Alanyz family was on its way to the hospital because Sara wasn't feeling well. They were stuck when the Rupes helped pull them to higher and drier ground.

David Rupe drove them to the hospital. Sara Alanyz is doing fine.

"We were at the right place at the right time," Jennifer Rupe said.
