Grief counselors on hand after death of student who collapsed in gym class

PASADENA, Texas – Students are back at Pasadena High School after a 16-year-old junior died suddenly Friday.  Eric Medina collapsed during a gym class workout.

Grief counselors are now on hand for the rest of the week.

It was a seemingly routine Monday morning at Pasadena High School, as students hurried to class, but Monday morning was anything but normal.

"Some people are crying; some people are sad and to themselves. It's pretty sad for everyone," said student Alma Adame.

Students are reeling days after Medina's sudden death.

School officials said Medina collapsed on the track after running several laps.

"They were really, really shocked because it was out of nowhere that everything happened, and they were just like, 'Oh my God,'" said student Giovanna Gonzalez.

Friends and family of Medina remembered him as a wonderful son, a great friend and an exceptional athlete.

Students said they will need some help coping with his death.

"I think it's a good idea for counselors because, I mean, we can only do so much," said student Blanca Olea.

The Harris County Medical Examiner says it may be a while before they know what caused Medina's death.

A visitation for Medina will be held Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel at 901 Main St. in Pasadena.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Funeraria Del Angel.
