Give it up, USFL. A revived United States Football League — borrowing the moniker and team nicknames from a league that went out of business 36 years ago — launched last month with all regular-season games being played in Birmingham, Alabama. USFL, The Sequel is following a familiar formula for spring football in recent years: a bunch of unknown players, sloppy play and games played in front of mostly empty seats.

HOUSTON – The XFL is coming back, thanks to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The actor, producer and retired wrestler teamed up with Redbird Capital and became the only bid to purchase the bankrupt league before the auction was slated to begin, according to NBC Sports and Sportico. The group paid $15 million for the league, split evenly with Johnson’s business partner and ex-wife, Dany Garcia. [Johnson, Garcia and Redbird Capital] are the best possible ownership group for the exciting journey ahead,” XFL President Jeffrey Pollack, who oversaw the sale process for the league, told Sportico in a statement. There was no word on when the XFL will make a return.

Most professional sports leagues have announced over the past couple of days that they would be suspending play for at least a month. In the case of the fledgling XFL and the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments, it's full on cancellation. On Thursday, the NCAA announced it would cancel March Madness with no intention of resuming at a later date. The XFL suspended the season at the halfway mark, while agreeing to pay its players for the full season and committing to being back in 2021. Given the length of the sports seasons and the expectation that the viral outbreak will not last forever, suspending seasons made sense.

HOUSTON – This win didn’t come easy for the Houston Roughnecks. Down 14-0 in the second quarter, a touchdown from Nick Holley puts Houston on the board. The stories of infections and deaths related to the coronavirus have prompted quarantines and event cancellations around the world. Other world soccer leagues are bound to be affected as are major international events like the British Open in golf, Wimbledon in tennis and, of course, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Yet, Major League Soccer has no plans currently to cancel games and U.S. Soccer will be participating in upcoming European tournaments.

The roughnecks are blessed with an exciting brand of offense, and a triggerman in quarterback P.J. (What up, Deshaun Watson!) So what was Deshaun Watson trying to say? I'll rely on my personal experience with Deshaun Watson, which is that he is sweetheart of a human being without an irritated, angry, contempt-ridden bone in his body. Also, perhaps his tweet was a shout out to a future teammate, because the "Walker as Watson's backup" train is picking up steam with each passing week.

Surely I'm not the only one who had way too much fun watching the opening weekend of the XFL. On tour in support of Widow's Weeds - which both mourns and celebrates the process of breaking oneself down and rebuilding - Silversun Pickups will perform at House of Blues on Tuesday. In support of the release of the second single from his upcoming album Trials, Bricks will perform this Thursday at the Continental Club. On tour in support of Daylight, Potter will perform at House of Blues on Friday. On tour in support of their upcoming album, which the band teased with their latest single "Almost Home," MercyMe will visit Toyota Center this Saturday.

The reviews are in for the first week of XFL action, and they are largely very good. For Houston fans of the NFL that are still a little hesitant to embrace the XFL, know that rosters around the league are dotted with former Houston Texans. He had a tackle and a QB hit in Week 1 of the XFL season. Charles James II was a cornerback for the Texans in 2016 before he was waived from the team’s active roster. Coming back to Houston to play for the @XFLRoughnecks this season!
