HOUSTON โ Matagorda County Sheriff Frank Osborne was arrested and charged with tampering with a government record, according to court records. The indictment alleges Osborne removed or redacted the jailing record of an inmate from the Matagorda County Jail on or about Feb. 3, 2020, according to court records. KPRC 2 has learned that Osborne is out of jail on a $5,000 bond. This is a developing story.
Van Vleck ISD students will see sneeze guards on their desks when they head back to school
VAN VLECK, Texas The Van Vleck Independent School District in Matagorda County is using sneeze guards on all desks for an extra layer of protection for students and staff this year. Theres an overall feeling of a little bit of anxiousness, but we also know for our community and for our kids that its important that we get back to school, said Van Vleck ISD Superintendent John OBrien. In the brand-new high school, there are signs in the hallways that remind people about social-distancing and hand sanitizerWe also have various things in the classrooms, like sneeze guards for the students, sneeze guards for the teachers, said OBrien. The district has sneeze guards in every classroom and on every desk. OBrien said they used leftover bond money for the sneeze guards and other safety measures.

Coronavirus kills another 1,000 in Texas in just 10 days
Only 10 days after crossing the 3,000 threshold, Texas surpassed 4,000 COVID-19 deaths on Monday. On Monday, Texas reached 4,020 deaths only 10 days after crossing the 3,000 threshold. Over the last week, COVID-19 has killed an average of 112 people each day in Texas nearly three times more than two weeks ago. For the past week, hospitalizations have swung between 10,471 and 10,658, for a 7-day average of 10,564.
6-year-old child shot, killed by his father in Matagorda County, sheriffโs office says
MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas โ The sheriffโs office in Matagorda County said a man is facing a capital murder charge in connection with a shooting involving his young son. Lt. James Orr said deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the Frost Mobile Home Community near Bay City around 3 a.m. Tuesday. The victim was a six-year-old boy and the boyโs father, Jacob Graves, 30, was arrested and charged with capital murder. Hudson and his daughters stopped by the property to drop off flowers for the family. She said she first met the boyโs mother a few years ago but also knew his father.

In a Facebook post, officials said that all beach areas will open Friday along with surrounding businesses as long as they can operate on a โto-goโ basis. Missing Matagorda County teen found safe after returning home, family says
MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas โ A Matagorda County teenage girl who was reported as missing has been found safe, according to family members. Jazaiha Leigh Williams, 13, was last seen Thursday in the Markham area. Family members said Williams returned home safe Friday afternoon. No other details were immediately released.
Friends share legacy of mother found dead in Bay City murder-suicide
BAY CITY, Texas โ Bay City Police are investigating what they believe is a murder-suicide. Bay City Police said 42-year-old Sandra Hogg and her husband 44-year-old Bryan Hogg were found dead at their home on Lazy Lane. Rose said Sandra Hogg had touched people's hearts all over the Bay City community. Hogg worked at Bay City ISD and for Matagorda County. 1 dead, 1 missing after boat capsizes near Colorado River in Matagorda County
MATAGORDA COUNTY โ One person is dead and another is missing Saturday after a boat capsized near Colorado River in Matagorda County, Coast Guard officials said. A good Samaritan reported seeing a 16-foot pleasure craft carrying four boaters without lifejackets on capsize at 10:30 a.m.Coast Guard officials rescued two boaters and later recovered the body of the third boater near the capsized boat, officials said. Crews are searching offshore of the mouth of the Colorado River for the fourth boater. "We will continue to aggressively search throughout the night for the missing boater," said Lt. Cmdr. "This is currently the top priority of Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi."
4 pedestrians struck by vehicle after driver slams 2 parked cars
MATAGORDA BEACH, Texas โ Four pedestrians were hit by a parked vehicle that had been struck by a pickup truck Sunday on Matagorda Beach, officials said. Officials said three of the victims were flown to Memorial Herman Hospital with serious injuries. The fourth was taken to Matagorda Regional Hospital by emergency medical services personnel to be treated for minor injuries. The driver of the Tundra, Devonte Roshawn Frank, 23, reportedly failed to adhere to posted warning signs indicating a reduced speed and that the road ended in 500 feet. Frank was arrested and taken to Matagorda County Jail.
15-year-old loses part of leg, multiple fingers when self-made firework bomb blows up
HOUSTON โ A 15-year-old boy is in serious condition at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital after a fireworks accident on Saturday, according to his family. Rowdy Radford tied around 200 sparklers together with tape and when he went to light the self-made "sparkler bomb," it blew up right in his face. "When it blew him up it caused severe injuries and they ended up having to amputate his left leg right below the knee, he also has severe burns throughout his entire body," Samantha Hansen, Radford's aunt, said. With a name like Rowdy, they say he lives life to the fullest, always trying to make others laugh. "We know he's going to pull through, it wouldn't be Rowdy if he if he didn't," Hansen said.

Dogs rescued from Bay City home up for adoption at Houston Humane Society
HOUSTON โ Nearly 30 animals rescued in Matagorda County by the Houston Humane Society are available for adoption. 25 dogs, seven rats and a ball python were rescued from a Bay City home on Jan. 28. The Houston Humane Society says 20 dogs and seven rats are available for adoption starting Thursday, and will have a special card on their kennel to let adopters know they were recently rescued. The ball python was sent to a reptile rescue. To adopt, please visit the Houston Humane Society at 14700 Almeda Road.
Tipsters receive Facebook threats over Bay City police suspension case
MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas โ The Bay City Police Department says people coming forward with tips are receiving private threats on Facebook. Last week, a Matagorda County Sheriff's Office deputy and Bay City officer were suspended, accused of posting derogatory comments online about the Ferguson grand jury decision. The department is working to track down whoever made the threats. The officer and deputy are on leave until the investigation wraps up.
Swing bridge damaged on Sargent Island
But if you're heading to Sargent Island, you're going to run into a problem. According to TxDOT, at around 11 p.m. Thursday a barge hit the Sargent Swing Bridge across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. It is the last swing bridge in Texas, connecting the community of Sargent to Sargent Island, which has about 50 permanent residents. Floyd owns a beach house on Sargent Island. The closure is not impacting barge travel and nobody was injured when the barge hit.
Water surrounds homes in Matagorda County
MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas โ People who live in Matagorda County closely watched the weather after storms dumped a lot of rain in the area Wednesday. Water surrounded and got into some homes there. It crept right under a house off of 2853 in Matagorda County that is built on stilts. Water surrounded other homes, like off of Highway 71 in Midfield. Some people who have lived in the area said they have not seen the water this high since Hurricane Carla in 1961.
