AdRepublican legislators who pushed the bill gave no evidence of any transgender athletes competing in Mississippi schools or universities. A Mississippi mother with a transgender daughter spoke Thursday during the Human Rights Campaign news conference. AdSupporters of bills such as the one in Mississippi argue that transgender girls, because they were born male, are naturally stronger, faster and bigger than those born female.

There have been at least 33 violent deaths of transgender or gender nonconforming people this year in the U.S., according to the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBTQ-rights organization. โ€œIf Trump loses, Iโ€™m hopeful weโ€™ll see federal agencies reversing the many anti-trans policies that the Trump administration has adopted,โ€ Strangio said.

HOUSTON โ€“ Houstonโ€™s only lesbian bar is now a recipient of a grant that will allow them to stay in business. In a news release Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), in partnership with SHOWTIME announced Pearl Bar and several other bars in the U.S. as recipients of the โ€œQueer to Stay" grant, which supports LGBTQ+ businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. โ€œIt has been a hard road getting through this, but between our community and this โ€˜Queer to Stayโ€™ initiative, we are excited to open slowly starting this weekend,โ€ Pearl Bar said on its Instagram account on Tuesday. As businesses are widely affected by the pandemic due to events such as Pride Month being canceled, widespread revenue losses were reported. โ€œWe deserve to spend our money where we are treated with respect and welcomed from the moment we walk in the door," said bar owner Julie Mabry in a statement.
