Firefighters will burn seven acres of the Houston Arboretum's savanna area, as part of its overall conservation strategy. Once the burning takes place, ash created by the fire comes back down to earth, where it returns nutrients and rejuvenates the soil, according to Christine Mansfield with the Houston Arboretum. The last time the Houston Arboretum approved a prescribed burn was in 1999, she said. "What they saw afterwards was a really, really wonderful fall wildflower season," Mansfield said.

Person hospitalized after vehicle drives off Eastex Freeway into body of water, HFD says
HOUSTON A person was hospitalized after a vehicle went off the Eastex Freeway into a body of water, according to the Houston Fire Department. The incident was reported shortly before 2 p.m. on Highway 59 feeder road southbound, halfway between Greens and Rankin roads. According to reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove into the body of water. SKY 2 video showed the car in Greens Bayou. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the incident.

Two more high water rescue trucks are on loan from the Southeast Texas Regional Advisor Council. The firefighters' union said the 11-point resolution was led by 97 HFD district chiefs. The vote is the latest in a tumultuous negotiation between Houston firefighters and the city. The union wrote in a release this move reflected "'serious and urgent concerns' over continuing mismanagement of HFD." As a fire chief, I was shocked when I arrived in Houston to realize that our fire stations had zero basic cancer prevention equipment.
Houston firefighter Kenneth Stavinoha who died on duty laid to rest Thursday
It was a sad day for the Houston Fire Department Thursday as crews said their final goodbyes to a firefighter who died on duty over the weekend. Firefighter Kenneth Stavinoha, 36, died after suffering a heart attack at Station 27 while he was working. Earlier this week, a procession was held in Stavinoha's honor as his body was moved from the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office to Klein Memorial Park. A wall of honor was formed at the medical examiner's office by the Houston Fire Department honor guard. Stavinoha had been a part of the Houston Fire Department since January 2018.

'Everything is fine': Lamar HS overcrowding not an issue, fire inspectors say
HOUSTON - The Houston Fire Department hasn't completed its inspection of Lamar High School, where photos showed overcrowded stairways on the first day of school. Houston building inspection reports show that the city approved designs for the new east, south and west wings of Lamar High School. Around 3,000 students are currently attending Lamar High, according to the HISD website. The principal at Lamar, Rita Graves, told KPRC on Wednesday that the foot traffic at the school is now "perfectly fine." Houston Fire Department accepting applications for new trainees
HOUSTON - The Houston Fire Department is accepting applications for new firefighter trainees, according to a department release. The release comes with Proposition B, the measure approved by voters last November to pay firefighters the same as police officers of the same or equivalent rank, on hold after a judge declared it unconstitutional in May. Houston city leaders and the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association are in the midst of court-ordered mediation to resolve the impasse over Proposition B. HPD: 9-month-old boy dies at apartment complex
HOUSTON - Channel 2 Investigates has learned from the Houston Police Department that a 9-month-old boy died earlier today at an apartment complex along Westheimer Road. HPD received a call from the Houston Fire Department shortly after 10:30 a.m. to meet firefighters at an apartment complex along Westheimer. A child was in an unresponsive state, according to HPD. Officers arrived on the scene and saw HFD working on the 9-month old boy. Detectives from HPD's Special Investigations Unit along with an investigator of the Crime Scene were at the scene most of the afternoon.
Naked woman bit officer during arrest near downtown Houston, police say
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A naked woman bit at least one Houston police officer overnight near downtown, authorities say.Several people called 911 just before midnight Wednesday after seeing the woman around the intersection of McNeil and Chapman streets.Officials say that as police tried to take her into custody, she started fighting with them.According to a sergeant, that's when she bit at least one officer, who was not seriously hurt.The Houston Fire Department checked on her.It's not clear at this time if she will face any charges.
