Houston man fatally shot on sidewalk in East End area

Victim had been detained, released after being found in residential yard hours before shooting, HPD confirms

HOUSTON – A man who had been detained and released by Houston police during an earlier call was later found shot to death Sunday night on Houston’s east side, investigators said.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers were initially dispatched to a nearby residence before 9 p.m. after reports of suspicious activity involving two men.

When officers arrived, they found one man in the backyard of the home and another in the front yard.

Police said one of the men was charged with trespassing. The second man was detained for questioning and later released.

Just hours later, around 9 p.m., officers were called to the 7200 block of Canal Street for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found the same man who had previously been detained lying wounded on the sidewalk.

Witnesses at the scene attempted CPR until Houston Fire Department crews arrived. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not released the man’s identity. Officials also said it remains unclear whether the earlier trespassing incident and the fatal shooting are connected.

No suspect information has been released.

Houston police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the HPD Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers of Houston.

The investigation remains ongoing.
