‘Today went really well’: Brush fire in NE Houston now 90% contained; crews continue to monitor

HOUSTON – A brush fire that has burned approximately 200 acres in northeast Houston is now 90% contained as of Wednesday, according to officials.

Firefighters with the Houston Fire Department, in partnership with the Harris County Flood Control District, have been battling the blaze since Saturday.

The fire is on a wooded 260-acre property along Greens Bayou owned by the Flood Control District.

Crews have been watching the winds over the last two days and built containment lines which have held.

HFD District Chief Robert Ausmus said Wednesday’s winds did not impact the fire and fire activity was “little to none” on Wednesday.

He said because of this, some resources have been demobilized. Crews will remain overnight to monitor conditions and will evaluate the situation again in the morning to determine what the next steps will be.

On Wednesday, officials say there had been a few reports from citizens in the area of problems with smoke. Air monitoring units were brought in and are still in use, but no unusual readings have been detected so far.

Ausmus said expect to see smoldering stumps over the next week. He said people often traverse through the area walking, so they shouldn’t be surprised to see the smoldering, but if they see anything they are suspicious of, they should call fire authorities.
