The Coast Guard crew members rescued four people from an overturned kayak and jet ski near South Padre Island on Friday. Coast Guard Station South Padre Island watchstanders received a call at 3:22 p.m. from the captain of the vessel โGet Awayโ reporting a kayaker had flipped over and needed assistance. A 24-foot Special Purpose CraftโShallow Water boat crew launched, arrived on scene, and pulled the kayaker out of the water. At 4:45 p.m., Station South Padre Island watchstanders noticed a capsized jet ski with three people in the water near Brazos Santiago Pass. A 33-foot Special Purpose CraftโLaw Enforcement boat crew arrived on scene, rescued the three people in the water, re-righted the jet ski and escorted the individuals to Isla Blanca Marina.

Coast Guard crews detected and interdicted two Mexican lanchas illegally fishing in federal waters off South Texas last week, officials report. The Coast Guard Cutter Harold Miller crew, in coordination with a Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi air crew, located and stopped two lanchas with a total of eight Mexican fishermen engaged in illegal fishing Thursday. Coast Guard crews detained the Mexican fishermen and transferred them to border enforcement agents for processing and return to Mexico. Lanchas are open boats 20 to 30 feet long with an outboard motor and are capable of speeds exceeding 30 mph. Lanchas are frequently used to transport illegal narcotics to the U.S. and illegally fish in the United Statesโ Exclusive Economic Zone near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi command center watchstanders received notification at 11 a.m. from Cameron County Beach Patrol stating a woman was swimming approximately 1 mile offshore Beach Access #5 without a life jacket and was possibly in distress. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi command center personnel issued an urgent marine information broadcast, diverted an underway Coast Guard Station South Padre Island 33-foot Special Purpose CraftโLaw Enforcement boat crew, launched a second SPC-LE boat crew, and diverted an airborne MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi. A SPC-LE boat crew located the swimmer, brought her aboard and transported her to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at Station South Padre Island. EMS personnel brought her to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas, in stable condition.

A container ship the length of more than three football fields has finally been pried from the muddy bottom of the Chesapeake Bay more than a month after it ran aground. After two unsuccessful attempts to dislodge it, and the subsequent removal of roughly 500 of the 5,000 containers it was carrying, the Ever Forward was refloated just before 7 a.m. Sunday by two barges and five tugboats. A full moon and high spring tide helped provide a lift to the salvage vessels as they pulled and pushed the massive ship from the mud, across a dredged hole and back into the shipping channel.

The Astrodome was brand new at the time, having opened on April 9 of that year. I still remember the first time I entered its cavernous environs, which was to see a game between the Houston Oilers and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1970. When I walked up the ramp and the field came into view, I was dumbstruck. There have been numerous proposals to renovate the dome but as of today, no improvements have been made.
