PORT LAVACA, Texas – The search for a missing father and son in Matagorda Bay has been suspended.

According to the Coast Guard, they received a call at 11:20 a.m. Saturday from the wife of the owner of the 40-foot shrimping vessel ‘My Possum.’ The woman said that a 50-year-old man, who was a deckhand on ‘My Possum’, and his 15-year-old son, were overdue from returning from shrimping.

The man and his son had departed at 5 a.m. to shrimp off Magnolia Beach aboard the vessel and were supposed to return by 10:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter along with another boat to search for the two. Other agencies also assisted.

A Calhoun County fire boat crew found a capsized vessel, which matched the description of ‘My Possum’, in the Matagorda Ship Channel off Magnolia Beach.

Crews searched approximately 77 square miles for over 21 combined hours, but the father and son were not found.

The search was suspended at approximately 7:55 a.m. Sunday.

“Whenever we send our rescue crews out, it is with the ardent hope we can bring everyone home safely,” said Homar Barrera, search and rescue mission coordinator, Sector Corpus Christi. “Unfortunately, after considering all pertinent factors, we made the difficult decision to suspend our search today.”
