Houston hurricanes and snowfall linked? This is what you need to know

(KPRC)

HOUSTON – Many people are beginning to wonder if there is a correlation between hurricanes and snowfall in Houston.

After all, Friday's snowfall comes right after Hurricane Harvey.  Back in 2008 we got 1.4 inches of snow the winter after Hurricane Ike hit us.  Is this a real pattern, or just a coincidence?

The fact is, We in Houston get snow much more often than we get hit by hurricanes.  In the past two decades, we got snow during several winters with no tropical activity the prior hurricane season.

Conversely, looking back at particularly notable tropical systems like Allison in 2001 and Alicia in 1983, there was no snowfall in Houston during the winter seasons following both of these storms.

Measurable snowfall following Ike and Harvey may seem like a pattern on the surface, but it is not.  Rather, it turns out to be just a coincidence.
