Human error blamed for families getting wrong 4th-grade test scores

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Fort Bend Independent School District says it was human error inside Quail Valley Elementary School that led to six families receiving the wrong STAAR test scores for their kids.

Channel 2 knows of one test being returned to the rightful owner because our cameras were there to capture the moment between the two parents. One of the parents is the wife of a Channel 2 staff member.

This story begins at the mailbox.

"So when I received this one in the mail, I open it up and I say 'Wow, it's not matching up,'" said Duha Nguyen, a parent at QVE, referring to the online test scores she received prior to the paper version.

"When I looked up and saw another student's name, it was quite shocking," said Errin Sherman, another QVE parent.

Fort Bend ISD said six fourth-grade families received the scores of another student. Because the envelopes were stuffed individually at QVE, the school concluded the mistake was most likely human error.

In an email out to QVE parents, Assistant Principal Jason Strutton said in part: "I want to assure you that we take student confidentiality very seriously at QVE, and we truly regret that this error occurred. Please know that we are working to investigate how this happened, and we will also be reviewing our practices to ensure this does not occur in the future."

Sherman was worried if the scores were to fall into the wrong hands, the next step could be bullying.

"Kids get teased for being too smart and they also get teased for not being smart enough," Sherman said.

These parents want proper notice next time.

"We already have accomplished more in five minutes this morning, finding out where the scores are, than the school district did all summer since they received the test," Sherman said.

Fort Bend ISD and QVE want parents to contact the school to get the paper copies straightened out. The correct test scores had already been emailed to all parents at QVE.
