Man wanted in fatal shooting of 12-year-old boy arrested

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The man accused of killing a 12-year-old boy and injuring his two older brothers at the family's northwest Harris County home on New Year's Day has been arrested.

Kahlid Yusef Worrell, 24, did not say a word to members of the media as officers took him into custody at the Harris County Sheriff's Office at 601 Lockwood Drive.

According to the Sheriff's Office, investigators learned the vehicle Worrell, better known as "Chirp," was driving and pulled him over Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Antoine Drive and Veterans Memorial Drive in northwest Harris County.

An unidentified woman who was in the car with him at the time was also taken into custody without incident.

Worrell is accused of shooting and killing 12-year-old Deunte Cooks on Jan. 1 at his family's home on Bammelwood Drive near Bammel Village. Investigators had been searching for Worrell since the shooting.

"I mean, you're supposed to be safe at your house. I just don't understand," said Deundra Cooks.

Cooks is a commercial truck driver who was driving home from Phoenix when he received a call that his son, Deunte, was shot and killed while watching TV in his house.

"Just like somebody took all my breath out of my body, I just started crying right away," said Cooks.

Sheriff's detectives say Worrell barged into the family's home and opened fire. Harris County court records show Worrell has a criminal history involving trespassing and burglary.

Sheriff's investigators said the shooting was the result of some type of disagreement between Worrell and Duente Cooks's older brother. Duente's two older brothers were also shot, but survived.

Worrell declined to answer any questions from investigators, deputies said. He is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond.
