HOUSTON – It took less than 20 seconds to destroy the 20-story former Prudential Building in the Texas Medical Center Sunday after fog delayed the implosion by a few hours.
Now known as the Houston Main Building, the structure owned by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center had been sinking and causing foundation problems, according to the hospital.
The 500,000 square foot building was erected in the early 1950's and was brought to rubble using dynamite to make way for a new, state-of-the-art clinical facility.
Dozens of onlookers showed up as early as 7 a.m. and waited four hours for the implosion that was delayed due to dense fog.
During the next several months, a massive park will take the place of the old building. In a few years, the new M.D. Anderson structure will be built, however exact details are still being worked out.
