Bus monitor accused of injuring disabled student

ANGLETON, Texas – Angleton ISD officials said they are investigating a case of a disabled child who was hurt by a school bus monitor.

A district spokesperson said the administration got the complaint Monday morning. By the end of the day, she said employees who were involved were suspended.

"Before we can educate a child, we have to make sure that they are safe. Our first priority is their safety and health. And all we can say is we are so sorry that this incident happened," Hanna Chalmers, Angleton ISD spokesperson said.

The school district police department arrested the bus monitor Tuesday and charged the monitor with injury to a disabled person.

"It's horrifying anytime any child is mistreated. But when you mistreat the most needy children, it's appalling. And we are shocked. Our whole goal with this is to find out what we can do to help this child and to protect future children from this situation," Chalmers said.

The district did not release the name of the bus monitor or anything that could identify the child. The district said it also notified Child Protective Services.

"AISD will investigate any claim of mistreatment against students, and the school district will do everything possible to ensure the safety of its students. At this point, the investigation is in the hands of the police, and AISD cannot comment further about the specifics of the case," Chalmers said.
