MEYERLAND, Texas – In one Meyerland apartment complex, there were plenty of flooded cars, washed-out apartments and destroyed apartments Wednesday night – but there were also smiles.
Many people who live at the Meyergrove Apartments at 4605 Braeswood Blvd had never talked to each other before Tuesday's flood. Now everyone is pitching in to help clean up.
Javier Freay said the water rose quickly outside his first floor apartment.
"We heard the neighbors come knocking on the door," he said. "I opened the door and the water was coming in."
His girlfriend, Jennifer Smith, is pregnant and the baby is due in three weeks.
"I've lived here for quite a few years and it's never flooded like this," she said.
Much of their clothes and furniture was destroyed, but to their surprise, people they had never met showed up to help them clean up.
"Everybody on the 2nd and 3rd floor, they were bringing us food and everything everyone really chipped in," said Smith.
In the parking lot, strangers helped Gregory Pearse get his water-logged van started.
"What I've seen today is such a heroic effort of giving and receiving," he said.
For the people living in this small complex, the flood destroyed their belongings, but it also reminded them how people can come together.
