HOUSTON – After a six-month crime spree, authorities believe they have caught and charged the Longhorn Bandit.
Willy Cuevas, 31, has been charged with robbery by threats for robbing four Chase banks on the northwest side of Harris County.
According to investigators, Cuevas lost his job as a Customs and Border Protection agent at Bush Intercontinental Airport and became desperate for money.
"People get desperate and they do desperate things, things they normally don't want to do but they feel that they have to to survive," said Chase Bank customer Daniel Pearson.
Investigators believe Cuevas began robbing banks in September 2014 with the first bank being the Chase Bank located at 12350 W. FM 1960. He hit the Chase Bank at North Eldridge and Louetta twice, once in November and again in January.
Deputies say Cuevas worked alone and only displayed a demand note with the threats of having a weapon but never displayed one during the robberies.
He was nicknamed the "Texas Longhorn Bandit" by the FBI because he often wore an orange University of Texas Longhorns cap captured on surveillance cameras.
Cuevas is out on bond. KPRC 2 knocked on his door but received no response.
