HOUSTON – A 33-year-old has been convicted of murder after investigators say he killed another man in front of kids who were playing outside a northeast Houston apartment complex in 2013. Benton was sentenced to 90 years in prison Friday.

Investigators said Astroroid Benton shot Donnell Williams, 36, in the head on Dec. 22, 2013, killing him. The incident happened about 4 p.m. at an apartment complex on Mesa Drive near Sterlingshire Street.

Witnesses said they heard two men arguing before hearing the single gunshot that ended the man's life.

"From what I heard, they were arguing over drugs and then the one guy had strangled him or whatever and started to choke him and then shot him," resident Melissa Mullins told KPRC in 2013.

A tip sent in to the Crime Stoppers of Houston led authorities to arrest Benton.

The punishment phase of Benton's trial will start Friday morning.
