HOUSTON – Popular ride-hailing app ?Uber rolled out its controversial "price surging" again, just in time for New Year's Eve, causing some Houstonians to look elsewhere for a lift.
Uber sent out messages on social media and email Wednesday warning customers that rides would be more expensive between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., with some trips costing more than $100.
Yellow Cab driver Ahmad Jublili said he thought he would see a surge in business because of Uber's price hike.
"It's gonna be a good night for us and a bad night for Uber," he said.
But Uber drivers like Ray Lilley said the increase was a simple matter of supply and demand and didn't think it would hurt his income for the night.
"I think's its better than a DWI, I think it's cheaper than driving and drinking,"Lilley said.
Uber said it expects to provide 2 million rides worldwide on New Year's ?Eve.
