HOUSTON – National High Five Day takes place on the third Thursday of each April and is as simple as it sounds - a holiday about giving high-fives and spreading good vibes.
How did this all start? Depends on whom you ask. We’re going with the baseball story that dates back to 1977, when Astros Glenn Burke and Dodgers Dusty Baker gave each other a high five in celebration. Baker’s home run had just made L.A. the first team in history to have four hitters with at least 30 home runs in a single season.
In the documentary by ESPN 30 for 30 Shorts: The High Five, Baker said all he did was respond to Burke. There was no planning of the high five. Baker was simply the recipient of the newly created handshake. Apparently, Burke was so fired up after Baker’s homer and the high-five that he smacked his first and only home run of the season.
High fiving is fun and uplifting. But having a perfect high five experience needs focus and accuracy. For a perfect high five, focus on the elbow of the other person, not the hand. When you aim for the elbow instead of the palm, you will hit the palm for sure.
