New York cracks down on ticket-scalping bots

NEW YORK – New York is cracking down on ticket scalpers using digital “bots” to scoop up the best seats at concerts and sporting events.

The bots can get around security on the sellers’ website and immediately purchase tickets for a popular show before human buyers can even get a chance to choose their seat. The tickets are then resold on websites like StubHub and TickPick. New York lawmakers passed a bill Friday outlawing the method.

If someone is caught using a bot to resell ticket, they will face a class A misdemeanor, which could result in imprisonment and fines. The bill comes after a report about one seller who used a bot to buy 1,012 tickets to U2’s concert at Madison Square Garden in June 2015.
