Power failure: Texas Senators take ‘first step toward reform’

HOUSTON – After two days and two hearings, Texas state senators and representatives will begin deciding how to reform the embattled Electric Reliability Council of Texas, ERCOT, which manages the flow of electricity across our state. Magness testified ERCOT is asking each of the 185 power plants that went down during the storm to provide specific reasons for the outages. Nye testified his list did include natural gas facilities, but he learned during the storm his list was not the most current. Garland Power and Light COO Tom Hancock told state senators the company invested in a robust winterization effort following the 2011 winter storm that caused similar problems in Texas. Hancock said as a result none of the natural gas facilities in their territory went offline.

The ABC News report Monday cites an FBI document that warns of an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans as the coronavirus crisis magnifies in the United States. As it has gripped America and Texas, the virus has unleashed widespread fear, anti-Chinese sentiments and outright xenophobia among American leaders. Family members stabbed in Midland included a 2-year-old and 6-year-old, according to the document ABC News obtained.

Witnessing the Great American Eclipse in Columbia, Missouri

COLUMBIA, Missouri – It happened just after 1 p.m. where thousands of students, as well as some alums, gathered at the University of Missouri and sat in the middle to get a sweet spot of the total solar eclipse -- and total darkness. She lives in Sugar Land and attended school at the University of Missouri. Tan said she took a private plane early Monday morning to get to Missouri. University of Missouri Student Andrew Gammon had a creative description.

Solar Eclipse: Importance of wearing proper goggles

HOUSTON – Astronomy students at the University of Houston prepared for Monday’s eclipse. "It doesn't happen every day,” said Dr. Lawrence Pinsky, a University of Houston physics professor. “And, as a matter of fact, the majority of people, on the earth never have an opportunity to see a total eclipse of the sun. We're not going to see a total eclipse but we're going to see a partial eclipse, about 2/3 of the sun are going to be blocked. If you do not use proper eye protection, you could hurt your eyes, said Dr. Amber Gaume Giannoni, a University of Houston College of Optometry clinical professor.

Which otherwise-obscured planet will be visible during eclipse?

For those who will be witnessing totality during the Great American Eclipse on Monday, you’re in for a real treat: not only will you see the sun completely blocked by the new moon -- so long as it’s not cloudy -- but it will get eerily dark. Birds may become confused or stop flying. And if you know where to look, you may even be able to spot a hidden planet.

What the world was like last time there was a total solar eclipse in the U.S.

Well, this was the last time America experienced a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse, or the phenomena of the moon's orbit aligning perfectly with the Earth and sun creating a "hole in the sky," is very rare to see from land. This total solar eclipse will have points of totality, or places where the sun will appear completely blocked by the moon, all across the country. The 1979 eclipse only had points of totality in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. Here's an example of a few more ways the world has changed since the last solar eclipse:

Red ribbons or safety pins? Examining eclipse ‘warnings’ for pregnant women

Here’s what they gathered:Pregnant women "should" …--Wear red and some kind of metal in order to protect the baby. Use a safety pin to fasten the ribbon to your shirt, and then you’ve included the correct color and an appropriate metal into your attire. So for protection, the mother is warned to carry something metallic, such as a safety pin, and wear it close to her unborn child. This kind of goes against the whole safety pin, keys or scissors thing, doesn’t it? As superstition will tell you, many women will deliver their babies on the day of an eclipse, due to the changes in atmosphere.

What to know about August's total solar eclipse

But rather we are talking about the Great American Total Solar Eclipse. People from all over the world will visit the United States to see this extraordinary sight, where the moon’s shadow will touch the earth. A total solar eclipse last was seen in the continental United States in 1979, when people in the northwest part of the U.S. were able to see it. Should you be unable to see it this time around, when will the next total solar eclipse be seen in parts of the U.S.? From when the total solar eclipse makes its way on land in Oregon to when it leaves the U.S. mainland in South Carolina, it will take a little more than a 90-minute flight across our country.
