Galveston’s ‘rubber-wheeled trolleys’ to return this holiday weekend
HOUSTON – Galveston’s “rubber-wheeled trolleys” will return this holiday weekend for people who want to travel along the Seawall and downtown. Beginning Friday, the trolleys will return to operating on their downtown and Seawall routes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The fare for the rubber wheel trolleys is $1 for adults, while children accompanied by adults ride free. The rubber wheel trolleys are different from the historic rail trolleys, a news release notes. Once the rail trolleys finish testing and receive certification, the service will resume.
These are the new parking changes you should know about on Galvestons Seawall
GALVESTON, Texas The City of Galveston recently announced new parking changes for Galvestons Seawall, city officials announced in a release. City officials redistributed 220 free parking spaces in four sections on the north side of the Seawall, between 12th and 19th streets, 33rd and 39th streets, 53rd and 61st streets, and 85th to the 9100 block of Seawall Blvd. "This change in free parking on the Seawall is part of those efforts.Previously, parking was available between 69th and 81st streets. The redistribution of parking spaces is part of Galvestons ongoing Beach Access Plan compliance project, providing wider access to all public beaches on the Island, Galveston city officials said. All other parking spaces along the Seawall are paid, and costs $1 per hour between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

It appears many Texans fled to Galveston and nearby beaches. There also appeared to be gatherings at Port Aransas Beach over the weekend. Other beaches like Surfside and South Padre Island seemed to be quieter.

Galveston closes public beaches in response to coronavirus outbreak
The city of Galveston announced on Sunday that it was closing all public beaches in the city and restricting traffic on the beach west of the end of the Seawall. As of Sunday, the Galveston County Health District had confirmed 60 cases of COVID-19 within the county. In a press release, the city said they had attempted to avoid closing public beaches as they wanted to provide residents a form of exercise while maintaining safe social distancing. “As a result, the city of Galveston must restrict access to the public beach. As a public beach, it must be closed to all.”The orders will be enforced by the Galveston Police Department, the City Marshal’s Office and the Galveston Beach Patrol.
Four suspects identified in Galveston Holiday Inn car burglary ring: police
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Four suspects have been identified after the Galveston Police Department says they participated in a burglary at a Holiday Inn.An off-duty police officer responded to the scene first at 5002 Seawall, causing the suspects to attempt to escape.As more officers began to pursue the vehicle, the suspects were detained.Authorities say 14 vehicles in total were invaded.The vehicle that the suspects attempted to flee the scene in contained stolen firearms, narcotics and more.Isaiah Melendez, 19, of Houston; Porcha Sweeney, 23, of Katy; Darrick Carriere, 18, of Houston and Elizabeth McCook, 18, of Missouri City have been identified as the suspects.All have been charged with two counts of theft of a firearm with a bond of $60,000 per count.They are being held at the Galveston County Jail.

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Galveston's biggest brewery is buying the first round, and all you have to do is help cleanup the beach.The event is called the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup.Galveston Island Brewing is offering one free beer to anyone who helps cleanup the beach the morning after all those Fourth of July celebrations.Volunteers can also get 10 percent off the rest of their tab.Volunteers can pick up a grain sack at either East Beach or Seawall and 37th.
