In Missouri City,  the Hightower girls basketball program is annually one of the most talented in the Greater Houston area.  This season was no different as Hightower capped of a terrific 31-4 season advancing to the Regional finals.

The 6′4′' top-recruit is always looking to pass the ball to her open teammates.

After taking the reins of the program in 2021, coach Cornelius Anthony has evidently turned the Fort Bend team into a force worth reckoning.

SUGAR LAND—For a little more than 33 minutes of Saturday’s rivalry clash against Hightower, Ridge Point kept having flashbacks to the worst of its play that had plagued the early part of its season.

There is a solid chance Fort Bend ISD will have a district all to itself when the UIL releases its biannual realignment Thursday morning.

FULSHEAR—Two years ago, when she made varsity but was coming off the bench, Hightower senior guard Jada Grigsby set out to prove herself.

HOUSTON—Paetow senior running back Jacob Brown gashed district rival Hightower’s defense for program records of 346 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the Panthers’ 35-12 Region III-5A Division I final win on Friday at Rice Stadium.

MISSOURI CITY—Hightower coach Cornelius Anthony has a difficult time finding a way to explain his team’s success.

KATY—Paetow assistant football coach Chris Maust liked what he saw when he looked into the eyes of the Panthers as they walked from the bus into the locker room before Thursday’s District 10-5A, Division I showdown against Hightower.

This district has it all. Perennial regional powerhouses. Rising up-and-comers. Coaching changes. A quality in parity that goes at least seven teams deep.

1 Atascocita – Have beaten ranked Manvel, Hightower, Westfield, Shadow Creek and Summer Creek… enough said. 4 Shadow Creek – Only dropped games to Atascocita and DawsonNo. 10 Summer Creek – Playing good ball. Lost to Elkins, Shadow Creek, Atascocita and Westfield by average of 5 points in all 4 losses. 12 Elkins – Beat Summer Creek and Cy Creek.

It was Bellaire, who was one game away from reaching the state tourney. The Cards made school history for the second time last year, advancing to the Regional Finals. Well, their three stars return, so state is a legit aspiration. District MVP Jaylon Calvin and first-teamer Elijah Lawrence (Rice-commit) make up the best backcourt in the city. Bryce Griggs is the best player to come out of Houston since De'Aaron Fox of Cy Lakes. And the Sacramento Kings' star has set the bar pretty high for Griggs. The 6-foot-2 combo-guard at Hightower is just on another level right now. He transferred to San Ysidro High School in San Diego back in June, but he's back. Senior Aaron Bland will add some scoring punch from the outside to complement Chatman and Griggs.

The Woodlands have fallen to Pearland and Hightower this season. The Highlanders will be favored in their final three games in District 13-6A after knocking off Oak Ridge 31-21 this weekend. The War Eagles had a shot to catch The Woodlands off guard, but the Highlanders proved to be too much. He had a TD reception and a punt return for a TD against the War Eagles. THE BIGSOLs Titan Tucker, Kaden Sieracki, MJ Ruhman and Cross Tucker are providing QB protection and holes to run through.

Marshall, Willowridge, Hightower and Kempner have new sets of district rivals with the UIL's realignment for 2020-2021. Marshall and Willowridge are still together in district play for the 2020 football season, but they won't see Manvel anymore. Kempner moves down from class 6A to class 5A, and they'll be in the same district - but they might not even play each other. His team and Hightower contemplate a schedule where opponents, dates and sites for the season's last four weeks are TBD. VYPE's Roger Smith talks to them all as the new season is set to kick off Oct. 1-3.
