Disney shifts 'Black Widow' and doubles down on streaming

(Marvel Studios/Disney via AP)NEW YORK โ The Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday overhauled its upcoming film release plans, postponing some of its biggest films and shifting Marvel's โBlack Widow," among other titles, to Disney+ the same time they arrive in theaters. โBlack Widow," once planned to debut in May 2020, had been set to kickoff the summer movie season on May 7. In December when announcing an ambitious array of streaming programming, the company suggested that Disney+ would regularly be home to Pixar, among other brands. Warner Bros. earlier set a release plan for 2021 that, like Disney will with โBlack Widow,โ gives viewers the choice of paying for a movie at home or on the big screen.
Audiences hold back, even as more movie theaters open

Many areas in North America are not yet fully open, including Los Angeles, and most California counties, Washington D.C., and much of Canada.
Marvel's Wanda has a future, but 'WandaVision' fate unclear

Itโs storytelling that determines how and when characters from the Marvel Comics universe hopscotch between TV and movies, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said Wednesday. Feige wouldnโt say whether โWandaVision,โ Marvel Studios' first original series for Disney+, has a future after its March 5 season finale. Asked if Marvel Studios might be able to regain them, Feige said he believes it could happen, but added that โrumors online about things revertingโ to Marvel aren't always true.

NEW YORK โ The Walt Disney Co.โs streaming plans shifted into hyper speed Thursday, as the studio unveiled a galaxyโs worth of new streaming offerings including plans for 10 โStar Warsโ series spinoffs and 10 Marvel series that will debut on Disney+. But Disney also kept its biggest films โ including Marvel's โBlack Widow," Pixar's โLuca,โ a โLion Kingโ prequel โ on course for theatrical release. Jenkins becomes the first woman to direct a โStar Warsโ film. Among the โStar Warsโ series are two spinoffs of โThe Mandalorian,โ set during the series' timeline: โRangers of the New Republicโ and โAhsoka,โ with Rosario Dawson. Seven Disney films topped $1 billion worldwide.

Taylor Swift 'folklore' concert film coming to Disney+
NEW YORK โ A concert film featuring Taylor Swift performing songs from her new album is coming to Disney+. The singer announced Tuesday that โfolklore: the long pond studio sessionsโ will premiere on the streaming platform on Wednesday. The concert film will include guest appearances from Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver โ acts who all appear on Swift's โfolklore" album. Swift filmed โfolklore: the long pond studio sessionsโ in upstate New York in September. The singer also directed the concert film.
Pixarโs โSoulโ bypasses theaters, will stream on Christmas
NEW YORK โ The Pixar film โSoulโ will skip theaters and instead premiere on Disney+ on Christmas, the Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday, sending one of the fallโs last big movies straight to streaming. The successive delays of the film industry's would-be blockbusters has only made the dire circumstances of movie theaters more acute. Without aid, the organization said, 69% of small and mid-sized movie theater companies will close or go bankrupt. โThe stark reality is that many movie theaters will not be able to open again if they donโt receive government help,โ says Esther Baruh, director of government relations for the association. It recently announced that it would lay off 28,000 workers, most of them at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

In 3 months, Disney+ has already scored 26.5 million subscribers
Disney+ has 26.5 million subscribers, the company reported in its first fiscal quarter earnings report on Tuesday, exceeding analyst expectations. Disney+, which launched on November 12, is the company's first foray into the streaming world. Analysts expected that the service would bring in 20 million to 25 million subscribers this quarter. The companyโs movie studio had a strong quarter with $3.7 billion in revenue, which was up more than 100% over the year prior. The companyโs streaming unit also saw revenue go up more than 100% from last year, bringing in $3.9 billion.
