High wind warning issued for parts of RGV
A high wind warning has been issued for Southern Hidalgo County and inland Cameron and Willacy counties. The high wind warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. today. South winds 35 to 45 mph with gust of 65 mph are anticipated, the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley reported. The NWS reports damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Use caution of you must drive, the NWS reports.

Hidalgo and Cameron counties reported 2,563 combined cases of COVID-19 on Monday along with 15 more deaths related to the virus. Of the new numbers reported Monday, 10 of the deaths and 774 of the cases related to the virus were from Hidalgo County. Many large and medium-sized Hidalgo County school districts report their case activity on a regular basis using a COVID-19 dashboard. During that Jan. 9-15 period the district confirmed 1,114 cases, almost six times as much as that August high. Cameron County reported a significant amount of pandemic activity as well Monday, adding 1,789 new cases.

Governor Greg Abbott announced Friday that he has requested resources from Texas state agencies to provide additional COVID-19 testing stations with some of those to be opened in Cameron and Hidalgo counties. The Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Division of Emergency Management will provide the resources. This additional testing capability will aid in identifying people with COVID-19, including the Omicron variant, and help prevent and reduce further transmission. Several cities in the Rio Grande Valley are already offering free COVID-19 mobile testing because of the spread of what is suspected to be the Omicron virus. “Detecting COVID-19 and preventing COVID-related hospitalizations are critical to our fight against this virus,” said Abbott said in a press release.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a wind advisory for both counties from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The NWS reports these two areas could experience strong southerly winds from 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 to 35 mph. The NWS has also issued a fire weather watch for all four Valley counties for Saturday afternoon. Strong north winds will develop behind the front as relative humidity values will decrease drastically by Saturday afternoon, the NWS reports.

The NWS reports flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be a possibility. A strong cold front will move through the Rio Grande Thursday afternoon that will interact with abundant tropical moisture moving on over the region from the Gulf of Mexico, the NWS reports. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible with locally higher amounts of 3 to 4 inches. The NWS reports excessive runoffs may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

As families get ready to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, they are in for a very wet day as a cold front makes its way into the Rio Grande Valley. The National Weather Service in Brownsville reports localized flash flooding is possible, especially in Cameron and Willacy counties. Some areas of the Valley could receive up to 3 inches of rain during the long holiday weekend. The rain chance increases to 60% to 90% on Thursday with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible. The Thanksgiving Day temperatures will be around 81 degrees with Thursday night’s temperatures dropping to the low 50s with a 70% chance of showers that night.

Tracking the tropics: Laura weakens to a tropical storm as it moves inland
HOUSTON – Hurricane Laura made landfall at 1 a.m. Thursday in Cameron, Louisiana. At midnight Thursday morning, Laura’s northern eyewall began moving onshore with 150 mph sustained winds and gusts up to 185 mph, making it a strong Category 4 storm. As of noon, Laura had weakened to a tropical storm with 75 mph sustained winds. It will continue to weaken quickly as it moves inland. Now that Laura is over land, it will speed up and curve eastward into the Mid-Atlantic states, bringing with it heavy rainfall.

Very lucky: Galveston, Harris counties lift evacuation orders after Hurricane Laura strikes east of region
HOUSTON The evacuation orders in both Galveston and Harris counties were lifted Thursday morning after Hurricane Laura narrowly missed the Houston region. The hurricane made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana, as a Category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph about 120 miles east of Houston. It was an even closer miss for Galveston, where the eye passed within 79 miles of the county. We were very lucky, said Galveston County Judge Mark Henry. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said that the effects of Hurricane Laura in the county were minimal and that people who evacuated can return to their homes.
