The guild was founded by the late Dr. Robert A. Henry (1916ā1996) and presented occasional concerts in Houston and elsewhere during the late 1980ā²s. Through its parent body, Houston Ebony Music Society, Inc., Ebony Opera Guild became a formal, tax-exempt organization in 1992 and produced Porgy and Bess, its very first opera. AdTo celebrate Black History, the guild has organized a concert saluting African American women as composers, singers, conductors, and instrumentalists. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1915 in the heart of Freedmenās Town. When bricks began falling from the structure in May 2008, city of Houston inspectors deemed it unsafe and demolished it. With Godās help we are going to rebuild. We donāt know what all we will have to go through but with Godās help our plans are to rebuild the church again,ā Williams said.

He sought the best brewer at the time, hiring Belgium brewmaster Frank Brogniez from Houston Ice and Brewing to create a new beer, and so Grand Prize Beer was born. Grand Prize Beer, Gulf Brewing Company (KPRC)The new brew was named after Brogniezās original 1912 beer, Southern Select. In 1963, Gulf Brewing Co. closed its doors and Grand Prize Beer stopped producing. Today, you wonāt find any cases of Grand Prize Beer, however you might find some memorabilia of the once-beloved cold drink.
