HOUSTON – The new Houston city secretary has made history as being the first African-American to be appointed after being selected by Mayor Sylvester Turner. Houston native Patricia Jefferson Daniel will succeed beloved city secretary Anna Russell, who died last year after serving that role for nearly seven decades. “No one can ever fill Anna Russell’s shoes, but I am honored to follow in her footsteps to support Mayor Turner, City Council, and serving the people of Houston,” Daniel said. ”(Patririca) Daniel brings a wealth of institutional knowledge to the position of City Secretary and will be an asset to the office as they move forward,” Turner said. She has been the Interim City Secretary since 2018 and I am proud to make her role permanent.”Daniel is an honors graduate of Jack Yates Senior High School and attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

HOUSTON – Members of a historic African-American church that was demolished by the city of Houston nearly 13 years ago are hoping they can convince the city to cancel a large debt connected to that demolition. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1915 in the heart of Freedmen’s Town. When bricks began falling from the structure in May 2008, city of Houston inspectors deemed it unsafe and demolished it. With God’s help we are going to rebuild. We don’t know what all we will have to go through but with God’s help our plans are to rebuild the church again,” Williams said.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Vice President Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, first Black and first South Asian to hold the position. She credits her time at a historically Black college, Howard University, with preparing for a life of public service. Students at Prairie View A&M University proudly watched Wednesday’s ceremony at the Memorial Student Center. Some students were emotional and felt inspired by President Joe Biden and VP Harris. LaShonda Williams is a graduate of Prairie View A&M and she’s also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, just like Harris.

In an open-ended question, those priorities far outpace others, like foreign affairs, immigration, climate change or racial inequality. In a reflection of the series of national traumas from last year, another issue moved sharply up Americans' priority list for 2021 — racial inequality. Even so, the impact of the virus dominates Adams' top issue: the economy. It remains a higher priority for Republicans, with 24% mentioning immigration, though that is down from 51% one year ago. Even as it falls lower on Americans’ priority list, Biden is expected to send a massive immigration overhaul bill to Congress on the first day of his presidency.

The Vatican is arranging for them, and any of the cardinals who might not make it, to participate in the ceremony remotely from their homes. He too lives at Santa Marta, where there has been at least one positive case reported in recent months. Among the new voting age cardinals is the first African-American, Cardinal-designate Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Washington, D.C. He too is concluding his quarantine in the Santa Marta hotel, where he said his meals are left on a tray outside his door.

Spokesman Stephen Chang says the calls were telling voters that Republicans would vote on Tuesday while Democrats and independents would vote on Wednesday. 1:45 p.m.Kathryn Cavanaugh cast her vote in Dallas in the Democratic primary for Bernie Sanders, saying she thinks he’s the candidate that can rally voters. The Travis County Clerk’s Office says multiple election judges and poll workers were no-shows for Tuesday’s primary election. The election office says it began implementing emergency procedures, with elections staff and others employees filling in as poll workers.

An African-American man is seated on a box of " Grand Prize Lager Beer" in the front center of the two cars. He sought the best brewer at the time, hiring Belgium brewmaster Frank Brogniez from Houston Ice and Brewing to create a new beer, and so Grand Prize Beer was born. Grand Prize Beer, Gulf Brewing Company (KPRC)The new brew was named after Brogniez’s original 1912 beer, Southern Select. In 1963, Gulf Brewing Co. closed its doors and Grand Prize Beer stopped producing. Today, you won’t find any cases of Grand Prize Beer, however you might find some memorabilia of the once-beloved cold drink.
