City, firefighters begin new round of mediation over Prop B
HOUSTON - Houston leaders and the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association began a new round of mediation Thursday in hopes to resolve the impasse over Proposition B.Houston Fire Chief Sam Pea among other leaders entered One Shell Plaza in downtown for the court-ordered mediation over the voter-approved ordinance that requires the city's firefighters be paid the same as their Police Department counterparts. In May, District Court Judge Tanya Garrison ruled that Prop B was unconstitutional because it violated a chapter of the Texas Local Government Code. "I know it will be good for the city as a whole, and that's my hope," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wednesday. We are going to walk in with the intent to resolve it, and hopefully, we will." Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association President Marty Lancton spoke said he is concerned about the sincerity of the mayor's negotiations.

KPRC2HOUSTON - A date and a mediator has been set for the additional court-ordered mediation over Proposition B. The city of Houston and the Houston Professional Firefighters Association is scheduled to begin mediation Aug. 1, according to the union. The 14th Court of Appeals in June ordered the union and the city to go back to mediation. The voter-approved ordinance, which requires the citys firefighters to be paid the same as their police department counterparts, was ruled unconstitutional in May. However, Turner said that the citys patience with recovering the money will not extend to firefighters who leave the citys employment.

The Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will re-enter court-ordered mediation Aug. 1 in an attempt at resolving the parties dispute over Proposition B, both parties confirmed July 17. The voter-approved proposition, which mandates pay parity between Houston police officers and Houston firefighters, has been caught up in legal challenges since shortly after it passed in November 2018. The mediation will be led by Houston attorney Daryl Bristow, a mediator mutually agreed upon by both parties. The city issued $17 million in back pay to Houston firefighters in May to comply with Proposition B.
