VYPE Campus Athlete Spotlight: FBCA's Cole reflects on year as TD Club of Houston finalistSolomon Cole is just one of those gifted athletes. In the fall he's a dynamic receiver for the football team, in the winter he hoops it up with the basketball team, which includes his younger brother Samuel this season, and in the spring he runs track. But it was for his football prowess that he was recently honored. After a senior season where Cole registered 1,084 yards and 13 touchdowns on just 68 catches, averaging 15.9 yards per catch, he was named a finalist for the 2020 Touchdown Club of Houston Private School Offensive Player of the Year. VYPE caught up with Cole prior to the event.

VYPE highlights five athletes or teams from across the private school ranks in this edition of Private School Playmakers Powered by Texas Citizens Bank. In a 31-21 victory over Brazos Christian, Floris rushed for 187 yards and a score on 39 carries. Against Legacy Christian Academy he had three interceptions, pushing his season total to five. And he has come back with a force, in his two games back Skillern has been unstoppable recording six total touchdowns. Others to watch on what could be the most talented OL in the district includes Cohen Carpenter and Clifton Self. Quarterback JD Migl (2,082 yards, 18 TDs; 939 yards rushing, 14 TDs) is a solid signal-caller but is more dangerous with his feet.

Not to mention, FBCA plays in the District of Doom with the likes of Westbury Christian, Lutheran South and Frassati Catholic. Senior Jared Bohny also earned first-team, all-district honors, while junior Zion Granville earned a second-team nod. With LaRocca, Cole and Granville back in the huddle in 2020-21, Lewis has some pieces to get back in the TAPPS state conversation. Second Baptist reached the state finals, while FBCA fell in the Area Round. Same goes for the FBCA Eagles under the direction of coach Trey Phillips.

Cole played both ways as a receiver and defensive back, earning first-team honors and was named the District Newcomer of the Year. The fall football season transitioned into basketball season, where Cole excelled as a guard. Playing football made me even stronger and more athletic on the basketball court." Athletically, FBCA opened up so many opportunities that I never would have gotten at the public school level. FBCA is playing a huge role in making Cole's dreams a reality.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKEIn 2018, Fort Bend Christian Academy only played eight football games. The Eagles had to forfeit the final two games because they did not have enough players to field a football team. A year later, a new head coach and a new energy around the program - which went from 15 to 40-plus players on the roster - Fort Bend Christian Academy played its full 10-game regular season schedule. Last year was the death penalty for us," Fort Bend Christian Academy coach Jordan Black said. Heading into this season, Fort Bend Christian Academy was coming off a 1-7 year.
