Texas Southern beats Prairie View 80-61 in SWAC final
(AP) โ Karl Nicholas scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Texas Southern placed five in double-figure scoring to upset top-seeded Prairie View A&M 80-61 in the Southwest Athletic Conference championship game Saturday night. Texas Southern shot 51% (29 of 57), adding 19 of 27 at the free-throw line. Gillam and Hopkins each scored five during the burst in which TSU held Prairie View to 3-of-11 shooting and two turnovers. Prairie View shot 34% for the game (24 of71) and had just five assists. Texas Southern is 1-8 in the NCAA Tournament, defeating North Carolina Central in the 2018 First Four for its lone win.
Prairie View A&M holds off Grambling State 17-10
ARLINGTON, Texas โ Chris Johnson had three catches for 108 yards and a touchdown and Prairie View A&M held off a late drive to beat Grambling State 17-10 in the State Fair Classic on Saturday. The Panthers (2-0, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) won their third straight in the series over the Tigers (0-2, 0-2) for the first time since 2011-13. Prairie View A&M led 10-0 at halftime and Johnsonโs 60-yard TD catch from Trazon Connely in the third quarter made it 17-3. Grambling Stateโs Elijah Walker cut the deficit with a 1-yard TD keeper in the final minute of the third quarter and converted a fourth-and-short at the Panthers 11 with less than four minutes to go. But the Tigers faced another fourth down with 5 yards to go, and Prairie Viewโs Storey Jackson sacked Walker with 3:06 left in the game.
Houston Endowment awards PVAMU with $1.5M grant to help increase hiring of qualified teachers of color
HOUSTON โ The Houston Endowment awarded Prairie View A&M University with a $1.5 million grant to help increase the hiring of qualified teachers of color, according to a release. The foundation invested the grant into PVAMUโs Whitlowe R. Green College of Education to support the universityโs educator preparation program. Its goal is not only to increase more qualified teachers of color but also to help prepare those educators for long-term success. The grant is part of the $20 million in funds Houston Endowment awarded to several Houston-area organizations that are committed to making racial equity and social justice in Houston a reality. โThe grant will help enhance the quality and distinctiveness of programs and services to best prepare students for careers as accomplished educational professionals.โ

Nearly 50 years later, Katy High School cornerback Bobby Taylor the grandson of Robert has received an offer to play at his grandfather's alma mater. In the private college realm, Huston-Tillotson University, Jarvis Christian College, Paul Quinn College, Southwestern Christian College, Texas College and Wiley College meet the criteria. Since his tweet, Texas Southern and Southern University (Both HBCU's) have thrown their hats in the ring for the talented cornerback. Bobby's father played for Notre Dame after a successful high school career at Longview High School before heading into the NFL.
