New Caney ISD bus riders battling the heat as school returns
According to New Caney ISD, there are a total of 116 buses in the district, six of them are without AC. Those six buses have the shortest routes, 30 minutes or less. The district said there may be AC issues from time to time, but when an issue arises, maintenance fixes it as quickly as possible.
Heat waves hitting U.S. and Europe ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change, researchers say
The heat waves simultaneously broiling the southwest United States and southern Europe would have been “virtually impossible” if not for climate change, according to a group of scientists who study the probability of extreme weather events.
It’s already been a long ride....
Talk about heat that isn’t horsing around! We’ve had more days in July with 100+ temperatures than not and we’re in for another week of them, not to mention that we’ve already had several hot months. In fact, since April 10th, at which time we were having a beautiful spring, we’ve averaged 88% ABOVE NORMAL high temperatures!

These Texas metros pay some of the nation’s steepest electricity bills
Affirming what we’ve all guessed at by now, a new report determined that residents in many of the Lone Star State’s metros pay some of the nation’s steepest electricity bills. This confirmation comes courtesy of Commodity.com, an organization that analyzes and reports on commodities, commodity trading, and cryptocurrency.

NBA tells teams to exercise caution when watching Super Bowl

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)The NBA doesn't want the Super Bowl to turn into a superspreader. The Super Bowl plan is designed to avoid more potential contact-tracing pratfalls as one of the top priorities. Clubs are instructed to not host in-person Super Bowl gatherings at a team facility.

NBA, union stiffen virus protocols; more games postponed
Utah's game in Washington on Wednesday was postponed because contact-tracing issues among the Wizards meant they wouldn't have eight available players for that matchup. “I'm for whatever the NBA wants us to do," Washington coach Scott Brooks said. When teams started testing in late November prior to the start of training camps, 48 players had positive COVID-19 tests. There were at least 36 players in the league dealing with virus-related issues or protocols when Tuesday began, based on information released by teams. Counting the two new postponements and another on Dec. 23 between Oklahoma City and Houston, the league has seen six games moved because of virus issues.

Some Houston-area neighborhoods are hotter than others, report says: Here’s why that’s possible
HOUSTON – Houston can get really hot but how hot, exactly? Data collected by the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT) suggests that there is a significant difference in temperatures in neighborhoods across the Bayou City. According to the EPA, heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. Urban areas, where these structures are highly concentrated and greenery is limited, become “islands” of higher temperatures relative to outlying areas. Daytime temperatures in urban areas are about 1–7°F higher than temperatures in outlying areas and nighttime temperatures are about 2-5°F higher.
Weekend forecast: Record heat expected
Feel like temps will once again be in the triple digitsA blazing Saturday saw Bush Intercontinential Airport tie a record high of 101 set back in 1994. Today is the 6th time we've hit 100 or higher this summerA heat advisory has once again been issued until at least 7pm Sunday because of the expected high temperatures and the high humidity which will take the “feels like” temperatures into the 108-111 degree range. Frequent water breaks, air conditioning when possible and light clothing are musts for this weekend. Sunday will see more sizzleAfter our hottest weekend of the year, temperatures will head toward seasonal norms after Monday’s front pushes into the region. The morning temperatures which have for several days registering record high minimums will also cool toward the normal mid 70s along with drier conditions as well.
Houston forecast: Sizzling heat, storm chance
The bigger issue will be the feels like temperatures which will be in the 108-112 degree range. Sunday afternoon storms possible (KPRC)A difference today from previous days will be the chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Rain chances will be about 30% for today and for the rain associated with the front that will arrive tomorrow. Break in high temps starting tonight and Monday (KPRC)After today well get a break from the heat and get some much needed rain from time to time as our high temperatures settled into the mid 90s. Our morning lows will be cooler as well but more importantly will be MUCH less humid with some of our northern communities possibly seeing upper 60s!

Houston to hold ‘largest single-day’ community-led heat mapping effort in U.S. history, officials say
HOUSTON – Recruited community street scientist volunteers will embark on a 300-square-mile effort Friday to measure and map urban heat in the region, officials said. Right around when temperatures tend to hit their peak in Houston and Harris County, nearly 80 community scientists will take to the streets with specially-designed thermal sensors attached to their cars or bicycles. This community science endeavor is led by the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT), a collaboration between The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC), Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the City of Houston, and Harris County Public Health (HCPH), and in partnership with Lowe’s and Shell. Officials say Houston and Harris County are currently facing a number of climate resilience and health challenges, and one of the most overlooked issues is urban heat. The project volunteers will cover 32 mapping areas, or “polygons,” that each represents a 10-square mile area.
Summer swelter in full force as we head toward 4th of July weekend
HOUSTON – Rain was on the retreat while temperatures trended upward in Houston over the weekend. It won’t be record heat but expect temperatures to be slightly above normal with high humidity in place every day. High temperatures, Monday, June 29, 2020By mid-week, a ridge of high pressure will be centered directly over Texas. July 4th ChangesAs July 4th approaches, the high pressure ridge will migrate west, signaling a return of rain to the area. July 4th Forecast10 Day OutlookAfter July 4th, we will likely return to a typical summer pattern in Houston.

Keeping cool in masks during summer heat
HOUSTON – Some masks, or the way you wear them, can trap heat and cause more humidity which also damages your skin. While it’s mostly only recommended to wear masks indoors, if you do wear one outside because you plan to be around a lot of people, infectious disease doctor, Linda Yancey, MD, from Memorial Hermann in Katy said paper masks might be most comfortable. “If you are wearing a cloth mask, take two or three and swap them out as they become damp. They’re going to be more effective with a dry mask and the lovely thing about cloth masks is you can launder them. So, wash your mask every night and you have nice fresh masks in the morning,” Yancey said.
