Harris Health medical centers in vulnerable communities reopening
HOUSTON โ Harris Health System has returned to full staffing at three community health care centers. Representatives said that staffing was scaled back at three locations in order to help supplement staff needs with the COVID-19 response at Ben Taub and Lyndon B. Johnson hospitals. The staff returned back to Acres Home, Danny Jackson and Northwest Community Care Centers on Wednesday, Aug. 12. โWe have about 33 clinical nurses and I think about 20 of our staff were pulled to go and help with the response at different locations. As of July 4, twenty-three traveling nurses have been contracted, according to the Chief Nursing Executive at Harris Health Maureen Padilla. Harris Health is looking to bring in an additional 133 nurses but admits finding help has not been easy. In fact, the majority of the 23 traveling nurses are returning to Texas after being deployed to New York City during their COVID-19 outbreak. St. Lukes Health System said theyve brought in over 125 traveling nurses to their hospitals in the Houston and East Texas area.

Houston-area woman credits recovery from COVID-19 during her delivery to blood plasma
HOUSTON Kony Chacon is crediting a century-old treatment for helping her recover from COVID-19 and hold her newborn daughter at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital. In a press release from Harris Health System, convalescent plasma therapy was used on Chacon while she was being treated by doctors for COVID-19, unable to see her baby and husband for approximately 10 days. The Houston-area woman thought it was symptoms related to her pregnancy at first, but ultimately led to a 10-day stay at the hospital. Her breathing led to doctors considering intubation, but opted for convalescent plasma therapy. Harris Health System and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank have partnered up to encourage those individuals who recovered from COVID-19 to donate their convalescent plasma.
