Levels ‘slightly above industry standards’ of Legionella bacterium found in water supply in Ben Taub Hospital, officials say

HOUSTON – Three areas with levels slightly above industry standards of Legionella bacterium were found in the Neuro-Psychiatric Center on the Ben Taub Hospital campus, according to Harris Health System.

Harris Health System said after the tests came back, the health system shut down and restricted access to the areas.

An outside service was hired to remediate the areas where the bacteria was found.

The health system said no one was affected by the water.

Legionella is a naturally occurring bacteria and can grow in stagnant water according to the health system

According to the CDC, Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People can get sick when they breathe in small droplets of water or accidentally swallow water containing Legionella into the lungs.

According to the health system, they are now awaiting follow-up test results of new water samples for those areas.
