The sheriff’s office says they received a call at approximately 6:18 p.m. about a possible drowning in the river.

The caller said the 33-year-old man, later identified as Jose Negrete, had been fishing in the river when he was overcome by the current and began struggling to swim to safety.

Authorities say multiple acquaintances who were with Negrete attempted to help him from the shoreline, but were unsuccessful.

Responding agencies began searching for Negrete. His body was later found approximately 50 feet from the shoreline by the North Montgomery County Fire Department Dive Team.

“The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. At this time this appears to be a tragic accident and there are no indications of any criminal acts related to this death,” the sheriff’s office said.
